tire replacement? 7 Years, 6 Months ago
I just found a 9/16 inch long screw in my rear tire that didn't penetrate all the way into the tire.
I'm trying to decide if I need to replace the tire.
does anyone know how thick the tires on our bikes are? ( not just tread depth)
I only have @2300 miles on this tire and I'm not an aggressive rider so it has very little wear yet.
also has anyone found that mixing brands of tires on our bikes to be a problem?
for example , stock up front and a metzler 880 in back.

All I can say is if you have ever had a blow out at HWY speeds you would know that answer, if it was mine I would replace it

Air up your tire to 50 psi. If it holds, you are good. Also, do you have spokes or mag wheels? If you have a tube, you are more than ok.

On the issue of mixing brands, I just installed a Metz 880 on the rear, with a Bridgestone up front. As long as the front has no cupping or excessive wear, you won't have a problem. That is an old wives tale.

THIS WAS JUST POSTED HERE IN RSC WHICH I PASTED BELOW .

READ THE POST AND & YOU WILL HAVE YOUR ANSWER.

Mixing diff mfg's tires isnt normally a big issue unless maybe your mixing a non radial with radial type tire or your mixing a hi perf race type tire's with a cruiser tire with 2 totaly diff type tread designs to 2 completely diff uses along with them also possibly having 2 diff type rubber compounds too.

BTW,I have a Dunlop on the rear and Bridgestone on the front of my 06 R* and no hadling issues at all thus far with approx 4,300 miles on those tires since there were both installed new on 10/2009.

I also pasted the link to news story on it,hope it worked this time.

I realize for yrs many peple have gotton away with plugging/repiaring car tires in the same way but on a bike when a tires blows or go flat quickly at speed your in a lot worse of a situation vs when when your in a car.

So why take that chance of you or you, your spouse or your girlfriend llosing thier life or being mamaed/crippled for life to save $100-$150 on a tire tire even if money is tight & you can't afford for change itat this time,it's just not worth it IMHO.

It would be very interesting to know/see what the cond was of all the rear tires on thoses bikes that crashed that cops said were all caused by rear tire issues.

I'd have to take that as meaning the tires were in poor cond ,had low/little tread left ,or were maybe 1 or 2 were plain bald when making a statement like that but i dont know that as fact.

You can put a tube in it on the mag wheel you just have to remove the valve stem from the rim. I have over a 1000 miles on my plugged rear tire.

I had a nail go through my rear when it 300km's on it. Put a new tube in it, patched the tire where the nail was to keep water and dirt out of the tire and rim, and have been running on it ever since. That was 6000 km's ago.

If you're uncomfortable running a patched tire, change it. Otherwise, happy riding. Oh, and I'm running a Dunlop on the rear and a Bridgestone on the front.

I don't have issues with running a patched tire but you have to realize your speed rating just dropped. Bike tires have a high speed ratings and can stand high speeds but when a tire is repaired that tire's speed rating dropped to the same speed rating of a wagon wheel tire seriously don't drive fast on a patched tire Personally I would have it replaced. Much safer!
