Big Drop in Gas Mileage with Rejet 4 Years, 5 Months ago
I have a 2005 Midnight Star 1700, had the dealer replace stock pipes with Cobra Speedster Longs, and rejet with the Dynojet kit. Kept the stock airbox, but installed a K&N filter. When I picked up the bike, I saw that the dealer had followed the Stage 2 jet kit instructions, even though the Dynojet kit says to use Stage 2 kit "for mildly tuned machines using a MODIFIED or aftermarket airbox, with the stock or K&N Filter".

So the dealer (following the Stage 2 instructions):
- installed the Dynojet needle on groove #4
- put in the DJ200 main jet
- put in the Dynojet pilot jet

The only difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 jet kit is using the DJ200 (Stage 2) vs DJ175 (Stage 1). I phoned Mike at Dynojet in Vegas, and he confirmed that with the stock airbox the dealer should have installed the DJ175 main jet instead of the DJ200 main jet.

I took the bike on a small trip, and the gas mileage is terrible with the Stage 2 jets (105 miles on a tank of gas, versus 145 miles before the rejet). I think it is running rich, I can even cold start it without using choke. Performance didn't seem any better to me than before the new pipes, filter and rejet.

I decided to order up a Barons BAK, which comes with Baron Jets and a K&N filter.

I'm taking the bike back to the dealer next week. Should I:

- get the Barons kit installed in its entirety, including the new jets that come with the kit; or
- keep the Dynojet needle and main jet (which is already set up for Stage 2), and just replace the stock air box with the Barons air box.

Do you think my gas mileage will return to its former glory (145 miles to the tank) or am I doomed to a 25% reduction to gas mileage just because of the new pipes, new air box/filter and jets?

Thanks
Peter

Apparently your dealer has no idea how to properly rejet your carb. Why would you take it back to someone who doesn't know what they are doing? A DJ 200 main jet is way too big even with an aftermarket air filter. A DJ 175 main jet is too small for a stock 1700 R*.

So with the Barons air box, you reckon I should swap out the Dynojet needle and DJ200 main and stick with the Barons needle and main? Or should I just downsize the DJ200 main to the DJ190 or DJ195?

Dynojet always goes too big on their main jet. If you used the 37.5 pilot, use the 175 main, & the clip on the 4th groove from the blunt end, you should be good. I have the Dyno kit & am set up this way & get mid 40's for gas mileage with great acceleration & plenty of power. I'm running an S&S filter & Samson Shogun pipes so I've got plenty of air flow. I adjust the PMS for best smooth idle at about 900 rpm. It comes out to about 2 3/4 turns. You can change that main without pulling the carb if you carefully remove the bowl & use a mirror. Be SURE the float level is correct as it's easy to get it too high while you're working on the carb. Just ask me how I know! Hope this helps.

Found your problem bud.^^^^^^^^^^^

Read up here and do it yourself. Nobody will care how well it works more than you do. Dealerships notoriously over-jet. Don't know why. I suppose they are too lazy to do it right, or don't know what they are doing.

If you use the Baron's kit, use only components from their kit. Don't cross kits. It's way harder to tune.

As a general rule on Roadstars, you don't need to re-jet unless you change both the intake and the exhaust system. You changed the exhaust, but the K & N filter in the stock box is still considered stock.

Even if you did change both though, 200 is really rich running. I'm running 175DJ on mine with a K & N open filter and New Freedom True duals exhaust. In town I'm averaging 37 mpg and over 50 mpg on State roads.

just fyi. "They" say that the DJ jets are actually smaller then the same numbered mikuni jets. Not sure how much smaller.

What size pilot jet is currently in the carb? I think the Baron's kit doesn't include pilot jets (at least mine didn't--but I did order a separate 40 pilot for my 1600). I guess the DJ ones do include pilot jets?

The re-jet kits do not include the pilot jet. You shouldn't have to replace a pilot jet to adjust for intake or exhaust changes. That's why they aren't included.

BTW - the DJ jets are different sizes than the stock, you can find this chart in the RSC tech articles for comparison.
