I used to own a Bonneville America and loved it. I am happy with my V twin but i did really like having something more unique.
Before i bought my RS i was strongly considering a Triumph Thunderbird. They were just more money than i could afford this year for a bike. If i can get to the point of owning more than one bike i can easily see the Thunderbird being the bike. I rented one earlier this summer and was blown away by both the power and the amazing handling.
The only real draw back i saw with the bike was limited aftermarket for real customization but i am sure that will get better over time. But i can see a Tbird being my daily rider slash touri g bike so i can really customize the RS without practicality limits.

I tried the dualsport thing with a 1998 900 Tiger. I grew up riding dirt bikes so it seemed like a natural progression. It's one of those ideas that sounds a lot better than it actually is, IMO. A giant dirtbike with a big motor seems like fun 'till you get it in the dirt and realize it aint gonna do what your old dirt bike did. Stopping distances increase dramatically with the extra weight and speed. If you just want to cowtrail they're OK I guess. That 900 triple was a gas though, it got me curious as to what the four might be like. I was able to pick up a nice 1999 Trophy 1200 cheap (Triumph resale sucks) and I really loved that bike. Never had any beefs with it or the Tiger.
I don't know why Triumph resale sucks so bad. You can pick up good used units for a song. If I sold my Roady I would like to try a newer Rocket 3...I have seen a few used ones come down under $7K. But I'm not real crazy about water cooled bikes...has a bad experience with one (not a Triumph, a BMW actually) and have been gun shy of them ever since. Deerkiller wrote:

The stats are impressive, but I'm not feeling the love. Kinda like the last girl left at closing time. She can do the job, maybe really well, but I wouldn't want to be seen on her.
Now, that little Tiger 800... I'd love to have one of those as a Zombie Apocalypse bike.
+1 on the Tiger 800. I'm beginning to love those dual purpose bikes more and more. I think something like that will be my next bike

thunderbird is a great bike ! i work on these at my dealer . the only thing i dont like is that the pegs hit so soon in the turns even with mild riding but maybe its just me . very smooth and flat power delivery . not many issues with them either usually customer caused by hacking up wiring thats all .
