How to install HD bags with lowered stock brackets 3 Years, 11 Months ago
Thanks to Stevie for the stock brackets and to a local CL seller who sold me the excellent condition black police HD bags. Not saying the Geno brackets aren't cool, but I wanted a cleaner look, bags still snug against the fender, bags not moved any further rearward and without any concern of the left bag frame hitting the upper chrome belt guard on my lowered 2008 Roadstar. The stock Roadstar bag brackets are slightly different so this necessitates a different technique for each side. The right bracket is closer to the center of the bike than the left one is. Here's what I did.

Remove the flat braces from the bag brackets.

Using a tubing cutter or a hack saw, cut the rear tubing of the bag bracket in the middle.

Using 7/8” tubing, make a 2.75” spacer. Run a smaller diameter piece of tubing (that's about 3” longer) through it to form a plug and weld it in.

For the right side, fabricate a new and longer right motor mount using 3/16” sheet and two 7/8” long pieces of small tubing. Tap two 8mm holes for the front bag frame arm to attach. Thanks Landon for the CAD drawing of the original bracket that I merely altered. You could probably use the front Geno's brackets here, but I wanted a cleaner look.

I have Freedom Duals, so for the left side, I had a 3/16” thick plug cut from round stock, welded it in the original hole and tapped two 8mm holes for the front bag frame arm to attach. You could probably use the front Geno's brackets here, but I wanted a cleaner look.

I also had to slice some of the inside of the bag frame tubing off so it would fit flush with the Freedom bracket.

Cut two pieces of 3/4" tubing about 16" long to fit in the groove on the bottom of the HD bags. Using a Dremel tool, cut 3/16" deep notches in the tubing for the left bag so when it's bolted to the stock left bracket tabs it sets lower and will allow the bags to rest on the stock tabs.

Bolt the tubing to the front tab of the left bag bracket. I will weld the tubing to the rear tab because the bags aren't straight if I bolt the tubing to the rear tab. In order to get rid of the unsightly tab at the front of the bag, I will weld in two more tabs and then cut the stock front tab off.

Bolt pieces of 1.25" wide flat bar to the under side of the right bag bracket tabs for the 16" tubing to rest on and be welded to. Bolting it to the bottom of the tabs will lower the bags 3/16" and allow them to rest on the stock tabs. In order to get rid of the unsightly tab at the front of the bag, I will weld in two more tabs and then cut the stock front tab off.

Fabricate hangers from 3/16" flat bar that attach to the upper bag bracket holes. Tap the lower holes to attach the bags to. I used knobs for quick release.

I'll use 1/16" ABS or another thin plastic to make spacer panels to go between the bags and the fender.

Piece-O-Cake!

I like the look of the leather Silverado bags better. I'll use the HD bags for touring in the NW rain.
