Im changing my air filter to a K&N RC-1980 this week I checked every thing from vacuum leaks to new spark plugs I have a HI flown fuel filter I cut down the pick up tube last year every this was good till this season. Every now and then it would sputter at 70 or so. But more so now. I've gone over every thing 5 to 6 times. runs great then just some time it starts to sputter on the HWY. I switch to res and it runs fine. this is with a full tank. SO I'm guessing its a flow problem. This is why Im looking for the part number for the correct Pingel petcock and adapter. Gona try this next.

If it runs fine when you switch to reserve, then it's not starvation.

I'm with Sk on this, have you vented the tank in any way? Vented cap or removed the rollover valve in the vent line?

+1 that seems to be the one step most either skip or don't make doubly sure is right. Throw that roll over valve away AND blow through the line to make sure it is clear. Also make sure the nipple coming out of the tank is clear (blow air in that way too) and the cap is vented.

I didn't mean to Hijack this thread. Just have a smiler prob. Started about a week ago headed down the HWY bike starts to sound funny like it bogging out like its a fuel problem. Got off the HWY started sputtering, Back firing, knocking. Pulled off the road played with the throttle a little just kept popping sputtering, and what not. Then a few sec later it runs just fine. This weekend I checked for air leaks, on every thing, and changed spark plugs. This morning ever thing was great till. Then like I said switched to RES fine!! UGH!!!! O and yes the cap is vented.

If it was running fine and then this started out of the blue I would be looking at a variable like trash in the carb/jets, trash on the main tube screen of the petcock, filter clogged, bad gas, sticky rollover valve, etc. not something that has proven itself to work.

Re:Pumpless Check List 4 Years, 9 Months ago
Ok so I went through and completely cleaned the carb, done every thing that was said to do for running pumpless. Havent took it out yet but now it backfires at start up and I think it might be miss firing on the front cylinder ever now and then. Could this be a coil. Just changed the plugs last weekend.
Main jet is a 190 dj set
4th clip from the top was in 3rd + 1 washer
New kn 1980 filter
Pms screw barrons at 3 turns out but did notice it realy loose fitting.

Have checked for air leaks and have none that I can find.
Checked intack for cracks all is good there.

So it just starts bogging out like not enough gas, it dosent really loose to much power, I have to down shift one gear until it clears up it will back fire pop shutter then clear up. This usley happens with in the first 10 mins of ridding. So ill start with this, ive hcecked the whole fuel system for flow, and all is well there.

Help please

Do you still have the spacer under the clip on the needle? From the blunt end it should be washer, clip, spacer, washer.

Did you lose the o-ring or spring around the PMS screw when you removed it?

No dont loose spring or washer or that o ring, I forgot to place the washer back on the needel. So the only thing ive changed was the position of the needel from 3 to 4 from the top and no washer and did a complete carb and fuel system from the petcock to the carb. The pms screw is sloppy loose and the very top lip is broke off but it still threads in fine. This carb will be the death of me I swear.

If you don't have a washer and a spacer under the clip on the needle it is sitting way too low = lean.

Did you check your float level? If its set to high, and your rich, it'll backfire on the start up. Is the enricher working like it was before?
You can check it on the bike, with a small clear tube.
Push the tube on the bowl drain, and run the tube along the back corner of the carb...you'll have to loop it a bit to get it into position, but the fuel will seek the level of whats in the carb when you open the bowl drain screw.
With the bike upright, ...on a lift, or somebody holding it...not on the side stand, the fuel level should be about 4 to 5mm above the bowl to carb mating surface at the rear(manifold side) of the carb.
