Help - Did I use 1700 or 1600 rear wheel spacers? 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Gettin old sux... Last year, before buying my 1700, I put a new set of tires on my 1600... For reasons I wont go into, I couldn't swap the tire, so I swapped the wheel... After all, I wanted to get the use out of the brand new rubber before selling the 1600...

So here's the issue, it's time to put the 1700 cast wheel back on the 1700, and I can't remember if I used the 1700 spacers with the 1600 wheel... or the 1600 spacers with the 1600 wheel... So here's the question...

When installing a 1600 spoke wheel on a 1700, which spacers would be used??

You member? Cuz I don't member...

Forgetfully yours,

The rear would be 1600 spacers with the 1600 wheel it should have also required you to use the 1600 pulley hub. The front should be a direct swap.

Thanks Dave, job done.

On a side note, I actually used the 1700 pulley with the 1600 wheel and I did notice the "pie wedge" dampers were worn on the little strip that holds the two sides together. Thought that was interesting. Is it possible there were any offset issues with the way it was before?

If you used the 1700 pulley hub with the 1600 wheel then the hub would have only been stopped by the metal in the cush hub touching. That would tend to cut the straps holding the cushions together. There wouldn't have been a solid connection between all of the inner bearing races. The 1600 pulley hub has an extended inner race that provides the proper spacing for the hub.

So, if I want to use a 1700 cast rear wheel I'll need the drive hub from my 1600 wire wheel and the spacers from which model?

You also need to change a bearing to make it fit right. I have done a few of the swaps from spoke to cast on 1600's and you will use the 1600 spacers after you swap the bearing.

FYI Dave,I didn't swap bearings when I did it. Could that have cause any damage? I'm thinking maybe to the wheel, and not so much the bike?

Read Scotts post. It wouldn't have caused permanent damage unless it cut the straps but is likely what caused the issue you found. As long as they are not cut I would use them. Even if they are cut I think it may just be a little harder to reassemble. I always spray them with a little silicone spray before reassembly. It conditions the rubber and makes it slip back together nicely.

Sorry to keep beating this thread to death
If Im following this correctly in order to go from 1600 spoke to 1700 cast. Ill use 1600 spacer (#3) in 1600 manual and I guess the bearing (#2) in the 1700 manual switched to bearing #2 In 1600 manual and use my 1600 hub? Also those bearings are pressed in correct?
