Dyno, Baron or 6 Sigma 1 Year ago
Hi, I'm new here and never had carburetor apart before. But I've read this forum about jeting and pretty much understand how it works. I need your help guys. I have 1999 Yamaha road star 1600 stock carb with kuryakyn hypercharge that I'm gonna be installing and K&N filter, short pipes BUB brand without buffles, and i probably will be removing AIS and porting intake manifold, not sure about manifold right now but i might be porting it in future. Elevation is about 1312-2526 ft above sea level. I guess I need stage 3 jet kit, but dyno and baron does not have stage 3 kit for my set up just stage 2, only 6 sigma have, as far as I see most people here are for dyno or baron kit, may be it's possible if I could buy ether one separately each jet, needles and staff, on ebay, if so could you tell me part numbers for each part to buy Whole stage 3 kit. Or do you recommend 6 sigma? Any one has deal with this manufacturer?

I have never heard of a stage 3 jet kit. Barons is the most popular jet kit here so you will get more support if you buy that. Also i wouldnt run without baffles myself. Has nothing to do with sound but you throw your torque right out the window if you dont have any back pressure. Even if you just remove the packing from the baffles and only have the steel part inside that will give you the loud pipes but still have your torque.

As for the air cleaner. That one is tricky to jet for but whatever main jet is suggested you will most likely want to step up a size. I had one before and had a afr gauge on my bike and the faster i went the leaner my mix got.

As far as the manufacturers calling a jet kit stage 1,2 or 3 it's all BS and don't matter. Get a barons kit and also order a Mikuni 37.5 pilot jet. As Jason said many members have had issues nailing down exact jetting with a HC. As far as a ported intake I would plan on getting one now because you will probably find your intake is full of cracks beyond repair. Also as Jason said running without baffles will result in the loss of TQ and will likely pop and backfire on decel. It will also make jetting very difficult and almost impossible to get correct especially if you also have a HC. While you have it apart you can solder shut the vacuum port on the intake that operates the AIS and you won't have to worry about the vacuum leak that occurs there. The rest of removing the AIS is just removing the parts and plugging the holes in the heads. You don't need to buy a AIS removal kit. All that is needed to plug the holes are some 45 cal brass shells, just tap them into the holes to plug them.

I'h bout the bike with this exhaust I never took any buffles out, it's just a short pipes with nothing inside in it, I just put a new chrome on it because they where rusty a bit, I only bought hypercharger used of ebay and have not yet installed, so I am in a trouble with exhaust? And probably with air box?

Yep, but you can buy/install baffles to fix that issue. If you just bought the HC you can try it and if you have jetting issues that you don't want to deal with get rid of it at that time.

Ok, let's get one thing clear, if you guys say that I need to have baffles and it's impossible to jet it without them, than why baron instructions says put the one size of the main jet with them and another without baffles. It's does not say anything about airbox and I thing they mean stock airbox, that's why though their kit would not fit my set up since I was going to put hypercharger.

They didn't say it was impossible to jet. What he said is the lack of baffles cause a lack of backpressure which kills the torque curve of the bike. You can run it without baffles and jet for it, but the bike will run better with them.

Your response sounds kind of sharp. I'm pretty sure you didn't mean it that way. It often pays to reread what you typed before you hit the send button!

They didn't say that you NEED to have baffles. They said it was better if you did. Not impossible to jet just more difficult. You will also lose torque by not having them. Torque is what gets you off the line, helps you pass that stack of cars, etc.

They didn't say that you couldn't put the hyper charger on. Do it if you really want it. Others have had issues trying to get them to jet correctly. They're trying to help by offering their experience.

Also keep in mind that Baron's is in the business of selling stuff. They offer generic instructions to sell their wares to the widest audience. If someone wants to run baffleless pipes and a hypercharger, they're going to offer a route to do that. Even if there are better performance options out there.
