Upgrades finished. 1 Year, 8 Months ago
Today I took a 80 mile test ride for all my new mods. New Bassani dual, ERdody seats, Roadwing shock, fuel pump removed, AIS removed, enriched cable relocated, carb rejected, grizzly needle/seat, poor mans BAK with K&N filter, gas cap vented, and yesterday I installed the latest model of ported intake manifolds from "Curt's International Manifold porting and superior Carb tuning". Got to give credit to Skywearpeg (Gordon) for his help a few weeks ago for giving me a great lesson on jetting and tuning the carb. Gentlemen I am amased at the difference in my bike now and compared to the stock configuration. Now .... maybe once I replace the fork springs I will be done! The throttle response and ability to pull from 50mph in fifth gear is amazing and gas mileage today was 40 mpg but I ran steady between 50 and 75 with no stop and go traffic.

Thanks to all who had input and advice!

It's amazing what these machines can do when you let them breathe. Mamayama has them so restricted for emissions it really is a shame.

Get that carb dialed in even better, and you will surely get mid-40's or better for your mpg.

You gas mileage guys make me chuckle. Sure, it's possible to get it into the 40mpg range but who would want to? You have to absolutely baby one of these things to get it there. If I'm in the mid 30's it's because I've been putting around and I just can't do that for a whole tank of gas. Might as well be driving...a Prius or something. Hell, I can't even baby the wife's car that much. I've tried and gotten good mileage but I just cannot go that slow for an entire tank of gas. I may as well sell all my bikes and take up knitting if I'm gonna go that slow. It's a motorcylce. A big boy toy. Not a hybrid Prius electric blah, blah. Ride it like you mean it. Sheesh.

Don't know why you'd chuckle... I ride like the next fellow, no different, but I'm forever getting mid-40's with both bikes. If it's not a better state of tune, then what is it?

I pull the enricher, hit start, and it immediately fires right up. I can ride off in the very same instant, and can have it all the way in before I've gone a mile... not 'cold-blooded' like my buddy's stock R* is. I can blip the throttle and almost never get a burp.

For whatever reason, they are both so dialed in, that I wouldn't dare touch either one, hoping to make 'em run any better. And... the result is always well into the 40's. Took a day-trip a couple of weeks back, up into New Hampshire and back... thru a whole tank, and got nearly 51. Had a ball... ran flawlessly. I get a chuckle, too!

My milage definitely varies quite bit depending on my attitude for sure, lol. But I know I don't hit the throttle in 5th gear at 50 MPH though. I don't like to be in 5th at less than 60 unless I'm coasting downhill. 5th @ 60 puts me at about 2k on my tach. Don't like to lug these big jugs, no sir I don't.....

Re:Upgrades finished. 1 Year, 8 Months ago
I've done all the bolt-on mods.

I run K&N universal filters. I rejetted the carbs as per the instructions with the jet kits. I have ported manifolds. I run the Dyna 3000, but don't recall what the dip switches are set at, maybe 32 (or was it 34?) degrees BTDC... Irridium plugs. I have freer flowing exhausts. I also went from the 33 tooth, to the 31 tooth front drive pulleys and also put a Speedo-Healer on each.

It was necessary to correct for a total of 11% between the factory fudge of about 5%, and the 6% change with the pulleys. Been by radar a number of times which was reading out the same speed as on my gauge.

A great number of guys here have reported mid-40's for mpg as a regular figure... I don't understand why that makes me a gas mileage guy... I check it from time to time as a way of monitoring my state of performance and tune... it's one of the first things to go as a tip-off that something may not be right.

2dogs only took an 80 mile test ride, and reported 40 mpg. I'm willing to bet that after he's run it thru a few entire tanks, provided the carb's state of tune is good, will also start recording a number into the 40's... then, he's going to be labelled a gas mileage guy, too?

I'm too old to start riding like a hooligan again... I just retired at 62!
