Still Backfires 1 Year, 9 Months ago
Thanks in advance for the input:
I have a 2001 R* with V&H short shots, and a K&N filter in the stock airbox. No other mods. It backfired bad, so a couple weeks back I removed the AIS and used the Barons kit to plug the holes. It still backfires, but not as bad. Any thoughts? I shouldn't have to re-jet with that level of mods, right? Maybe the short shots will always backfire...

You might have an exhaust leak right at the header/engine interface. Get a lit incense stick or cigarette and slowly move it around the exhaust pipe with the engine running. If there is a leak, you will see the incense stick pulse with the exhaust stroke. You may need to replace the exhaust gaskets and/or retorque the nuts. Don't over torque them as you can break the bolts and that would be bad!

Joe (txulrich) is correct decal popping is a sign of an exhaust leak you may even have an air leak at the intake manifold. Do what Joe suggested but the Short Shots will tend to pop because they are so short so you may need to rejet. I run Bub Stubbies which are as short and don't have a problem so you should consider a more open air filter. The fact is you are letting more air out with that exhaust but not letting more air in. As for the Bub Willie exhaust the same thing appies and if you haven't removed the AIS do so ASAP. General rule of installing a more open exhaust with still keeping the sock air box is a bad combination. More air in and more air out is good.

So, Curt, what do you think about drilling the stock box, starting with 1 hole in the middle, and then adjusting from there? I have a K&N 066V to put on, but then I know I will need to re-jet. I will do the smoke air leak test tonight.

When you drill the hole, you'll have to re-jet.

I would change one thing at a time through this process. First, track down the source of the backfire as best you can. Second, I would then do the K&N and re-jet. You can't undrill the hole in the airbox once you put it there!!

This is a great place for the holes, if and when you do drill them. These are 1 3/8 inches each. This is a 1600.

I'm with Joe and re-jetting isn't all that hard and performance is much better. Those short shots are a big part of your problem with popping if you had long shots or something like those it wouldn't be a problem.

AIS gone, BAK with 2 1/4" wide K&N filter, 170 Main, 37.5 Pilot Washer and Spacer under Clip in 4th Groove, PMS 2 3/4 turns out. Still some Decel. popping ??? New OEM exhaust gaskets, NO exhaust leak. Next deep intake leak check.
