Belt squealing noises 2 Years, 8 Months ago
|
|
I just switcheded my rear pulley from the OEM one to a wire spoked one. Now the belt is making a lot of what I would describe as squealing type of noise. It happens constantly and sounds sort of rubbery like as if it is rubber rubbing on metal. I know describing sounds is difficult using words. Anyway I have adjusted the belt and it makes this noise when I use my hand to just move the belt against the pulley or with the bike on the lift and manually rotate the tire. It did not do this before the pulley change and the belt is centered perfectly and it makes no difference how loose or tight I adjust it. Any ideas?

You've thrown a monkey wrench into the harmony the belt and two original pulleys once had.
The belt and pulleys all were broke in at the same time.

is the belt rubbing something? tracking straight on the new pulley? old and stretched belt?
put it on your lift..rotate it slowly (by hand) and listen...where is the sound coming from?

If the pulley is used that may be why it was for sale.

Yes belt is tracking perfectly straight and it is lined up dead center on the rear pulley. The sound is coming from the rear pulley and the belt as it rotates with the pulley. Really obnoxious sounding. Dont know how old the belt is. previous owner does not list it as having been replaced on his work done to the bike sheet he gave me so it may be the original. COuld it be a time to replace it and let them all harmoniously come together as a new family?

It does not appear to have any issues (sharp edges or wearing that I can see on the teeth).

No it is most definitely the belt. It sounds like squeaky shoes on a gym floor.
