I'm A Dumb Ass Part II 3 Years, 7 Months ago
So in my previous posting I disclosed that the issues I had were caused by my own poor craftsmanship in the wiring department. I did not do a very good job of an install of my coils, which I fixed. In the process I discovered that my used fuel pump had died and it was replaced with one that is an aftermarket one that appears to be working. And after getting my bike up and running for a week or so and riding it for abot 200 miles all of the sudden we are back to the issues again. I have taken the carb apart and cleaned it and now it is taking forever to start if at all. When it does start it seems to run fine (not fuel starved) at lest several of the times it has started it was fine. Fuel is flowing into the carb when I did a visual check. The last ride was fine but seemed to be getting harder to start (turns over fine but just was taking many cranks to get it started, otherwise cranking at speed).

Now it just wont start at all. If you remember I pulled the TPS off the carb when cleaning it but it did not seem to be moved after reassembling it as it worked fine for a week. But now WTF? No I did not check the output on the TPS because it was riding fine.

1999 with BAK kit with Dyna coils and Short Shot exhaust

Symptoms:

Very difficult to start
Huffs through the carb when turning over every so often
Back fired through the exhaust on the last ride once
When it does start sometimes it will die when throttling up
Sometimes it dies if choke is pushed in when it is warm (after 1.5 minutes of 1/4 choke)
It seems to idle fine for a bit and then dies (that is if it starts at all)
No miss fires or strange sounds when it is running at speed

Any ideas?

Make sure the idle, when the bike is warmed up, is at or close to, 900 rpms.
If your not running Seafoam in the fuel, start.
Have you tested the battery?
Have you purchased a set of Erbs FullFlowPowerWires?

Bypass the fuel pump, by running a piece of 5/16 fuel line from the petcock, to the carb, and ride it a few days to see what happens.

I have run a half a can of seafoam through with this tank. My battery is fine and I replaced the wires several years ago with some large gauge wires. I will try the fuel line replacement for a few days and I guess that will tell me everything since I cant get it started at this point. If it starts and runs that will tell me.....what exactly? Fuel pump fail? Or something else.

It will tell you that something involved in your fuel pump system, isn't working. Have you replaced the fuel filter lately? If the filter is good, then you can replace the pump.....again. Trace down the various things electric involved with the fuel pump, and make sure their good, or .....what is the word I'm looking for???....go "--------",

The fuel filter is a cleanable type that the previous owner installed and I took it out and blew it out with my compressor but maybe it is worth looking at again. I did pull the fuel pump again yesterday just to check that I did everything correctly with that one and it is fine and pumps fine. Will try the fuel line replacement and see. This one has really got me stumped though.

A cleanable fuel filter? Really? Is it cleanable, or the kind where you replace the element?

+1 on bypass the fuel pump. Your afta market fuel pump, (do you know the output psi?) stock only puts out around 1 to 2 psi. is the accelerator pump putting fuel in the throat when a twist of the throttle?

Yeah its one of those cleanable $45 filters. Has a metal screen in it you blow out with compressed air.

Yeah gas is shooting into the throat with a twist of the throttle.

Those fuel filters that have the metal type filter can actually cause problems with motorcycles.
They were made for cars and car fuel pumps have a lot more pressure.
I have had trouble with them on my custom builds.
