06 midnight in wichita 5 Years, 7 Months ago
Hi folks,
Finally registered after sitting back and reading for the last month since I moved from a Vulcan 900lt to the 06 Midnight. I knew I was missing something and now I know what, power and good gearing. I love the way this moves down the road!! 1000 miles in the first month and planning a 2500+ trip to AZ in two weeks. While I'm not new to bikes it has been 15+ years. Got caught up in the rat race then had a daughter. Saddled up again last year with an old 650 Savage, my daughter kinda liked it, YEAH!!!! Over the winter got the Vulcan, she liked it better, YEAH!!!! Nice bike if you stay in town but that was not my plan (as if I have a plan). I'm not a gearhead but I have a few tools, so I may follow some of your leads! Thank you all!

Anyway... I am so glad to have found the site, so much good reading!!
A couple of questions as I keep it up...
*******************
*******************
*******************
1. Auxiliary/passing/riding lights come on with key, stay on when started, turn off as soon as put in gear. Will come on again only after the key is cycled off/on. I have been into both, cleaned connections and replaced the stock switch (which was bad). Any ideas?
*******************
CORRECTION... after further inspection of the symptoms this is what it is doing right now, i was likely wrong before... aux light connections look good after replacing a couple wires and the origional bad switch. aux light switch is on. turn on key, lights up. start motor, lights out. red kill switch off, engine no longer running, no lights. cycle key off then back on, lights up. start motor, light out. same same same.
with key off red power wire in housing is equal to ground. key on red power wire in housing is +12v. start motor red wire returns to equal to ground. this gremlin has got me stumpped. yes cold run another wire but would rather figure this out. what say ye wise rodies??

2. Dogbone grind and flip. I think I'll try it. Roughly how much does this lower? Have seen multiple reports so just asking, that's leaving everything else alone and only grind/flip/reinstall.
UPDATE... made/used 2x8 lift, bone is out, my cheap grinder spun it's guts just as i started. will work a small and slow hand grinder in the morning.
UPDATE... wow what a difference, flat footed with room to spare. a little tricky a couple of times being solo but wow... headed out for some road time shortly, thank you all!!

3. The do like the hard bags, such a nice finish. That's the problem, in a couple weeks when I roadtrip I'm thinking it's likely my non bike (duffle bad) luggage will at some point rub it wrong and damage the pretty. Any suggestions?

4. Anyone have a tall sissy bar for swap or sale?

Thanks again for being here!

Philip

Hi Philip, and welcome to the Clinic.

As for your questions:

1. Never heard of this one.

2. The flip dropped my bike maybe 2-2.5 inches. Easy and cheap to try, even if you end up changing it back. No harm, no foul.

3. Turn your duffle bag long ways and use it as a back rest while riding. The stock bags have a pretty soft clear coat on them and will scratch up easy.

4. Sorry, can't help ya here.

My Aux lights don't come on with the key, only after engine is runing. Always assumed that to be correct.

Flip&Grind is easy to do if you have a bike lift. Only rear horn needs to come off first. Lowered my bike 2.75", I weigh 250lbs so I tightened the preload about 2 turns. No botteming out, but you will grind floorboards more often.
