Jetting, washer, no washer 1 Year, 1 Month ago
So I've read a crap load of threads on jetting and I'm soooo confused.

I have 02 1600, AIS removed, 3" Big Straights with smartpartz baffles installed. Going with RC1980 K&N.

I have the Barons Jet Kit with the 37.5 pilot jet that I'm trying to install. I'm looking at the instructions and it says to put clip on 5th groove. Then I read some people say 4th groove with washer under clip. Can someone please straighten me out ?

The kit comes with 2 clips why ? Spare ?

The 4th grove and pilot jet screw out 2 1/2 turns out is a good starting point.
Spare clip is what it is.

So Tech,

What about the washer? I've seen with washer, without washer,

The way barons instructions read, it says clip, spacer, washer, going towards tip of needle. But then I've read on forum, not to use washer after spacer.

I use 170 in my carb
As far as spacer goes, above clip or below(mines above) all
depends on how engine performs. Some engines are a little different. This in my view is the starting point

You need read more. Or you need to read the right threads

Set the clip in the 4th, with the plastic stock spacer and a single silver washer(it is actually a shim) under the clip.

Set up like that, the needle is considered to be at 4.

The shims are a half step.

If you leave the washer off the bottom then you are at 3.5. ....remember??? A shim is a half step.

You can also get to 3.5, by putting the clip in the 3rd, and putting two shims under the clip (as well as the fat plastic stock spacer) .....see what I did there?

Barons sets things rich, is why they use the 5th groove.

1600's do good with a 37.5 Mikuni Pilot, and a 170 Mikuni main..... see what I did there...Mikuni!!! If it's not a Mikuni jet, then you have no idea what size jet your using. No. All jets labeled with 170, are not the same.

Why would you leave the washer off? Because after testing, you may think 4 is to rich in the midrange/transition.

A milkuni carb only has a Pilot circuit and a main circuit......... but wait??? Didn't I say mid range???? The midrange is a compromise between the main and pilot circuits. You want the Pilot circuit rich enough to make the transition to the main circuit, without being to rich on the needle........like say if you put the clip in the 5th.

The clip position on the needle is the starting point. The only thing that matters, is what's below the clip. The clip establishes the altitude of the needle in the slide. When you add stuff below the needle, you change the elevation. That, changes how rich or lean the needle is.

Ok, I have Mikuni 37.5 pilot and 170 main jets. I'll set the clip on 4th groove with spacer and washer under clip to start and 2.5 turns out of PMS. Thanks

You're a star.

For the record, Barons uses Mikuni Jets in their kits.
