Never understood why ball bearings would be used for a side thrust application.
Barnett needs to rethink their choice of bearing, especially if they're going to offer a heavier spring upgrade.

Yeah, it uses the factory bearing that Yermamaha put in there. For sure the wrong application, and I was thinking about going to the heavier duty springs, but now I dunno.

You guys are making me nervous with this talk of Barnett clutches. I turn my bike off when sitting in traffic and hot weather, probably a good thing it looks like.

Maybe one of the few advantages of living in CA. We can split traffic. Definitely keeps the bike from getting to hot.

I should have had them replace the bearing when the recall was done. I didn't think about that. It worked fine for 53k miles, but yes ideally it would be replaced with a side thrust bearing of some sort.

Someone mentioned their dots on clutch disk were not lined up. When I opened mine up the dots were not aligned like the book said they should be, but rather than change them I put them back the way I took them out. I have had some clutch dragging issues but it goes away with some quick fiddling. I imagine it will catch up with me sooner or later.

Goody over on the RSR forum was the one who found out about the 7003C bearing which I think was later changed to the 7003B. Both are angular contact ball bearings and the B is rated at 20,000+ rpms in oil while the C is rated at 67,000. Probably changed to the B because of price. They are rated for both radial and axial loads. I don't remember the primary ratio but I doubt our clutches see more than 3,000 rpms.
The 6003 that comes in the bike is supposed to be a deep groove bearing but it looks like it has its limits.
The roller bearing in the picture doesn't look like it's designed for radial loads. It does give a good idea how the angular contact ball bearing works though.
The important thing is that it can only be mounted one way.

That failed bearing looked starved for oil.
Studying the lubrication charts for the Road Star shows no forced oil into the bearing area and centrifugal forces would sling what little oil that manages to drizzle its way.
I would think constant clutch applications in slow/stopped traffic would give it a workout and clutch cables not checked for some free play would play havoc to giving that bearing any reprieve when it would be constantly spinning with some load on it.

I plan to contact EBC about the flatness on my clutch spring. I think it would be good for Barnett to know about that roller bearing
failure no?
Something like Bikeron showed is much better or just a straight needle thrust bearing.
