Options for cleaning up the stock rear end 10 Years, 10 Months ago

Since the day I brought my bike home I've wanted to at least change out the license plate frame, but never did it because of that darned wire housing right behind it.

Any tips for working around all that?

Any kits that remove / replace the whole rear light bar assembly?

I love the rear LED tail light, that stays. I don't hate the rear signal lamps, but they could be better. What I really don't like is the whole license plate set up with the reflectors and wire houseing. Yet I want to remain LEGAL and the license plate light is in that bar.

Ideas?

There are a number of laydown units. KuryAkyn has a nice setup with turn signals. Pricey but nice. Doc

What are "lay down" units? I've been to the Kury site, and found mostly license frames or those side mount kits. Trouble is, most of that stuff is generic (not made specifically to mount up to a roady) and I don't want to be out there carving up my bike (yet). Love to see a link to the set you mentioned and pics if anyone has them.

Here you go ..... http://www.kuryakyn.com/products.asp?bn=metric&ci=3656 It's for a R*. 'Laydowns' are short for laydown license plates. The plate is angled forward so that sits closer to the fender. Doc

You can always get creative with the stock parts like I did on my '05. Can't go back though.

The stamped steel plate bracket has a nice 45 degrees or so built in which I used to my advantage. I cut the cast aluminum mount off parallel with the ground and right above the fender bolt boss then drilled and tapped a couple of holes. Also removed the rear reflector mounting tab off the plate bracket.

After I put it all back together I used some thin cardboard to make a pattern for a wire cover to go behind the plate. Once I had it the way I liked it I used my pattern to cut some thin aluminum sheet and then bent the cover using a vice and some steel blocks as a makeshift brake.

The light on the blinker bar still illuminates the plate enough to see it in the dark.

Obviously this is not a bolt on mod but it was cheap.
