ais removal ?? 1 Year, 4 Months ago
Ok so the question is is removing it actually necesary? reason I ask is the AIS is gone on my 2000 but remains on my wifes 2003. Both start, run, and accelerate about the same and decel with no popping to note...mine actually more than hers but that may be a small carb tweak but I happen to like a little small pop every now and then.

Her bike cranks 90% of the time with out using the choke. Runs great through all gears and has zero that I have ever heard accel or decel popping. So is this neccesary to remove? Oh yeah she has stock carb and Vance and Hines full exhaust setup. Not just slip ons

Thanks in advance for any advice

My 07 still has it on. Changed pipes, air kit, and jetted. A little popping on hard decel.

No, not necessary. Removal increases airflow to the left side of the motor, and improves the aesthetic value as well (it's ugly). Sometimes, changing to aftermarket pipes will induce deceleration popping, which can be alleviated by removal and plugging the A.I.S. and it's relevant orifices.

The AIS simply pumps fresh air into the exhaust chambers, to combust any unburned fuel the exits the cylinders during those times when there is a rich condition created. Primarily, those times when the throttle is closed. Idling and decel. The vacuum in the intake manifold, is what allows it to work. It has zero to do with the bike starting and or running.

I removed mine because....

I didn't find it particularly attractive.
It opens up the front of the motor, so more air circulation can get to the cooling fins on the air cooled motor.
Excess weight. Why bring it along.
Its one more thing that can break and cause a poor running condition. Why bring it along.
It reminded me of all the Nannies in the world who think they know whats best for me, based on a whole lot of contrived and carefully picked over data, to support political agendas.
Without the stock exhaust muffling the detonations, you will get some decel popping. Why bring it along.

In the end, there are more negatives then positives. Did I mention its an aircooled motor.
