Kids are great, aren't they? 1 Year, 5 Months ago
So, I turned my back on my 5 year old while in the garage and he did this with a sponge sanding block

Side cover and rear fender. Its only a year old and has no other blemishes. I know its not big but I'm the type of person that the details bother me especially on something I own. My wife said it was my fault for not using my cover. She and my son are not allowed in the garage for now.

Anyways, I tried some mild rubbing compound but I don't think this is buffing out. Any ideas? Learn to live with it?

Kids that age are going to make mistakes, try not to be too hard on him. But, I would get it fixed, you don't want it as a reminder that will keep you upset. Pay to have it fixed, and move on. A life lesson for both of you.

2000 wet/dry sandpaper. Use a sponge block and finely sand the areas. Then, use 3M #2 compound with a soft polisher. Wipe, and then use 3M #1 polish. Should be good as new.

I am citing this from memory. Do a little research on sand and polishing a paint job.

Thanks for the quick replies. Honestly I don't trust myself to do this as I tried buffing out some stuffing on my truck and it was even more noticeable (cloudy). If hate to think how much it will cost for someone else to do it, especially when that money could be used for other things. I have baby 3 on the way! So, maybe it will take a back seat for now.

Ouch! That's to bad Patrick. I would trust Warden's suggestion. Just take your time doing it.

That does suck... And I can't imagine the Mrs. response helped soften the blow... Just Google, "Polishing out deep scratches". There are tons of videos... Do lots of research and test it on small spots first. You'd be surprised at what can be done.

Be thankful you have a son that is physically capable of doing that.

Run it by a local body/paint shop and ask them if it is damaged past the clear coat. If it is the only thing that can be done to fix is to re- clear coat it. If not past the clear they may hit it with a buffer in that spot for less than the cost of the compounds to do it yourself.

Amen..........we dont agree on much but I would give anything for that to be the least of the bad things my kids could have done,,,,,,,,but alas they had to move to angel wings and I have to wait for all the good and bad

Ouch! As davej said, it will probably sand/buff out.
