Description of the area and its main challenges

Kainuu-Koillismaa area is an underpopulated area in North-East Finland with hundreads of lakes. The fishing traditions are strong and vital both among professional and non-professional fishermen. The lakes are mostly underfished and aquaculture has great potential. Four main challenges have been identified: 1) the long distances which increase costs 2) ageing of fishermen and entrepreneurs 3) the lack of techology to utilise small-sized fish; 4) the limited fish product mix.

Main focus of FLAG strategy

The FLAG strategy has two main lines: 1) Opening more markets for fish products (logistics, techology, fish product development, co-operation etc. and 2) Strengthening and reinventing fishing business (new fishermen, new techology).

Partnership

Lead Partner/Responsible Legal Entity :  Fishermen´s organisations, aquaculture organisations and local public bodies.                 

Links with LEADER : The FLAG area covers three LEADER LAGs: Lake Oulujärvi LAG, Elävä Kainuu LAG and Myötäle LAG. The FLAG is administrated by the Lake Oulujärvi LAG but ran in close partnership with the two other LAGs.
