The EU's energy union strategy is made up of five dimensions. According to the new rules on governance of the energy union, EU countries are required to develop integrated national energy and climate plans that cover these five dimensions for the period 2021 to 2030.
Energy is essential for our way of life. We need it, for instance, for lighting, heating, transport and industry. It powers our washing machines, computers, televisions and other devices we use almost without thinking.
The Commission’s approach is to ensure Europeans have access to energy that is secure, sustainable and affordable.
- Securing energy supplies
- Expanding the internal energy market
- Increasing energy efficiency
- Reducing emissions and decarbonising the economy
- Supporting research and innovation
