Selecting AREAS that complement local strategies and organisational capacity

Axis 4 of the European Fisheries Fund is different from the other three Axes, since it is targeted at fisheries areas (it is entitled ‘Sustainable development of fisheries areas’) rather than just the fisheries sector. The following documents provide guidance on the requirements of the regulations concerning areas targeted for support under Axis 4 as well as ways of assessing an area´s potential to benefit from Axis 4.

Defining fisheries areas under Axis 4 EFF

In the context of the regulatory requirements, this fiche gives an overview of different ways of selecting fisheries areas and the merits of each, as well as how the definition and selection of areas can affect the success of implementation of Axis 4. In particular it deals with size and critical mass of an area; common characteristics and coherence within an area; local identity; and development potential.
