Description of the area and its main challenges

The western coast of Huelva lies in southeast of this Andalusian province and borders on the provincial capital to the east, with the Andevalo district in the north, Portual to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. The main challenge of the area is to strengthen the economy and empowering the population to best take advantage of the fishery resources of the area while ensuring its sustainability in the long term and reshaping the local economy towards other, complementary activities.

Surface area/km²: 230 Coastal or inland:  Coastal

Population Density/ Inhabitants/ km²: 240  Protected areas: theNature Reserves of Marismas de Isla Cristina, Marismas del Odiel, and Enebrales de Punta Umbría and the Portíl lagoons.

Main focus of FLAG strategy

Our strategy aims to foster local fisheries development through both individual and collective actions, including:

  • Supporting SMEs
  • Improving the marketing of local produce
  • Fostering growth and development in the area
  • Promoting better know-how related to fishing, aquaculture and processing.

Environmental Management (1-5, where 5 is high priority and 1 is low priority) : 4 

Improving the competitiveness of the fisheries sector (1-5) : 5 

Diversification into other activities (1-5) : 3  

Project examples and ideas

- Research into the natural fishery resources in the area 

- Promoting  the quality of the coastal environment

- Encouraging value added to fishery and aquaculture products.  

- Support to fishery and aquaculture SMEs

- Fishmeal from fish waste
