10 Trends Shaping Democracy in a Volatile World

After 13 consecutive years of decline in democracy and freedom around the world, it is necessary to closely examine the trends that underpin this troubling development – as well as challenge some long-held assumptions. Perhaps the arrival of digital technologies is not the boon to democracy, freedom and societal engagement that had initially been anticipated? And what if the inherent economic and innovation dividend that democracies long enjoyed were to be successfully challenged by overtly autocratic regimes?

This paper examines how democracy is evolving worldwide, singling out threats and challenges, but also potential opportunities ahead, amid a palpable rise in civic engagement and the emergence of new social movements.
