The Unit is the centre of competence for Next Generation Internet focussing on novel technological breakthroughs, new architectural solutions and advanced service concepts. It also ensures the EU vision and voice on Internet Governance in fora such as IGF, ICANN, G8, ITU and WSIS. The Unit will put in place a flagship initiative providing Europe with essential strategic elements to build the Internet of tomorrow, exploiting novel technological breakthroughs, new architectural solutions, innovative forms of data searching like predictive or autonomous search, new forms of service discovery and composition, authentication, mapping, blockchains, geo reference data sets, personal data spaces, contextual data crawlers, semantics and advanced service primitives. The Unit implements research and uptake in areas such as collective intelligence, social innovation, distributed architectures for decentralised data governance, and engaging citizens by creating collective awareness. The Unit is responsible for the further evolution, take up and exploitation of open service platforms such as FIWARE, focussing on standardization of core components, and innovation ecosystems based on open source. The Unit will promote the FIRE concept of large-scale, experimentally-driven research. The unit ensures Internet Governance, IETF participation and the management of the .eu domain.
