TRIME sought to create a community of social housing tenants that would achieve a long lasting change in the use of energy in their homes. This was to give tenants greater spending power when managing their household finances.The project created an energy saving advice model, using tenant ‘Energy Ambassadors’ (EAs) that other Social Housing Organisations (SHOs) can adopt and continue to use in the future.TRIME trialled an approach based on training social housing residents as EAs who then went on to contact, advise and encourage their neighbours to save energy.  Energy Advisers were provided with resources to help them offer advice, including: an electronic tablet, an app to collect meter readings, factsheets, a short video as well as a tool box. An online challenge encouraged residents to try out small eco-gestures so they could save energy and money. SHOs provided high levels of support to the EAs through meetings and feedback sessions.The advice provided by the EAs was monitored in terms of both energy saved and number of residents signing up to eco-gestures through the challenge. The 3 stages of the TRIME model - recruitment, training and advice – form the basis of the energy saving advice model developed as a result of the project.


The project achieve the following results:
  • Engage 55 residents as Energy Advisors and 388 households as participants seeking to reduce their energy consumptions.
  • Save an estimated 124 000 kWh of gas (equivalent to 7% to 8% savings) and 11 500 kWh of electricity (equivalent to 1% to 2% savings) in the participating households.
  • Obtain pledges from another 18 SHOs during a series of dissemination workshops to implement a similar energy saving advice model in their own organisation.

Lessons learned

  1. The effort required to recruit ambassadors and households is higher than was originally anticipated. Experience has also shown that the ratio between ambassador and the to be recruited households should not exceed 1:10. This is lower than the original assumption that one ambassador could successfully recruit more than 25 households.
  2. Particiapting Social Housing Organisations stressed the social component of the Energy Ambassador model, realising that they have many residents keen to engage in this type of activity, to learn something new and whose self-esteem was raised by taking part and receiving recognition for their work.
  3. The TRIME team found that Energy Advisors were trusted by their neighbours to provide advice, and the tenants felt that the SHO was investing in their neighbourhood by training local people and supporting them to improve local relations.
  4. The model is most likely to have the highest impact when delivered in tandem with other energy saving initiatives such as retrofit, tariff switching campaigns, smart meter installations or support to buy electrical appliances.
  5. In order to recruit tenants to be EAs, the model relies on securing the support of customer facing SHO colleagues. These colleagues are important for promoting the scheme, identifying tenants who need support, increasing commitment to the model within the organisation, and identifying possibilities for further roll-out in the neighbourhoods of the SHO.
