The Unit is responsible for the legislative and other activities relating to digital services, including online platforms, and certain aspects of e-commerce, such as geoblocking. This covers problem analysis, policy development, preparing and drafting of initiatives, including legal proposals, to monitoring the implementation of the legal framework. The Unit is responsible for the Digital Services Act package (covering both the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Acts, proposed in December 2020). In carrying out these tasks, the unit works closely with colleagues within the DG, in particular those working on electronic communications, audiovisual policy and copyright, and privacy and security, as well as colleagues in other parts of the Commission, notably on free movement of services, taxation and consumer protection.
