European Commission - WiFi4EU stories: Tinos, Greece

Tinos (Τήνος) is a captivating Greek municipality located in the Cyclades island group, at heart of the Aegean Sea. Tourists of all ages come to Tinos to admire not only the world-famous Cycladic architecture, sandy beaches, and blue waters, but also the Panagia Megalochari church, an important center of worship that conveys a spiritual aura to the area.

Thanks to the citizen-oriented digital plan developed by the Local Council, Tinos has taken the first steps towards the digital transformation of the public administration. With a EUR 15,000 WiFi4EU voucher in tow, the municipality is now able to offer free connectivity to its tourists and citizens, even in the most remote areas. The WiFi4EU team spoke with Mayor Ioannis Siotos to know more about the newly installed WiFi4EU network.

Tinos was granted a voucher during the first call of the WiFi4EU programme. The Local Council, who received information about the initiative through the Ministry of Transport and Communications, recognised the potential of the initiative as an ideal complement to the municipality’s digital plan. The plan developed to facilitate Tinos’ digital transformation consists of two main pillars: the transition from paper forms to e-documents, and the shift from in-person to the remote digital services for the citizens. According to Mayor Siotos, “WiFi4EU is already facilitating the implementation of our digital plan as it covers a large and remote area of the municipality”.

The WiFi4EU network was officially launched on 27 July 2020 in 11 areas of the municipality. The hotspots are located in squares, beach areas and sport facilities where citizens and visitors often gather, especially in the summer months. In particular, WiFi4EU hotspots are serving areas not covered by any other public Wi-Fi service or infrastructure. WiFi4EU has given the municipality “the possibility to provide high-speed connectivity, which will be accessible to all categories of the population, something that in the Greek provinces is still difficult to implement due to lack of infrastructure”, explained Mayor Siotos.

“The reception was positive”, concluded the Mayor, confident that free connectivity will improve the daily life of tourists and citizens, not only in the city but also in the mountains around Tinos. During your holiday in the island, make sure you wander around the beautiful squares, taste the local delicacies and connect to WiFi4EU!
