NGI Forum 2021: Building the Internet of humans

This online event is dedicated to the future of Next Generation Internet, gathering researchers, innovators and policy makers at work on several fronts to restructure the Internet to be fit for the future.

The Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative aims to foster a vibrant, open, human-centric Internet movement that links research, policy and society for the creation of a better Internet – an Internet that respects the fundamental values of privacy, participation and diversity.

In the past two years, the NGI initiative supported through Horizon 2020 more than 600 innovators involved in more than 400 individual projects, addressing a wide range of topics, such as better data governance, privacy-enhancing technologies, data portability and services, self-sovereign identity, blockchain technologies, and technologies improving search and discovery.

Thierry Breton, EU Commissioner for the Internal Market, and Eva Kaili, Member of the European Parliament, will respectively deliver welcome and opening remarks on both days.

The event will include a mix of policy and specialist talks, open discussions and interactive working groups. The emphasis is on stimulating discussion and the free exchange of ideas between policy makers, researchers, SMEs and startups, industry players, and civil society. Some of the main sessions covered at NGI Forum 2021 include:

  • upgrading the current internet architecture
  • vision of the future internet
  • Internet of trust
  • digital principles
  • NGI at international level
