What We Do

One of the functions of our office is to assist Governor Mark Warner in his appointments of over 4,000 individuals to serve on Virginia's boards and commissions. On behalf of Governor Warner and myself, I want to extend a sincere invitation to all Virginians to participate in the government of our Commonwealth by offering to serve on a board or commission, or by recommending qualified candidates.

As evidenced by the theme of Governor Warner's Administration, "One Virginia: One Future," we are deeply committed to the principle of including all segments of the Commonwealth's population into our government. This is what makes the theory of self-government a reality.

Note: For information regarding corporations, businesses, certificates of authority, or change of address please contact the Clerk's Office in the State Corporation Commission at 804-371-9733 or toll free (Virginia only) 866-722-2551.

 FAQs

When is the Report of the Secretary of the Commonwealth available?
Each year the Report (aka the Blue Book) is made available on the first day of the Regular Session of the General Assembly (second Wednesday in January).

How can I find out what openings on boards and commissions will be available this year?
Pursuant to Section 2.2-405 of the Code of Virginia, by January 15th of each year the Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth prepares a list of all board and commission vacancies scheduled to arise during the year. The list is free to the public and available here.
