Doors Open Alberta

Organizing a Doors Open Event

Doors Open Events can be large or small and include a variety of new and old buildings, places and spaces. Organizing committees include people involved in many fields: museums, tourism and economic development, architecture, heritage and town planning, arts and culture and retail and corporate businesses. Essentially, anyone who is interested in celebrating the unique buildings, spaces and places of the community is welcome to join the Doors Open movement!

Each community plans events that capture the spirit of the community and interest of residents and visitors. Create events unique to your community or get inspiration from any of the many events other communities have planned:

  • Art walks
  • Photography contests and photo exhibits
  • Country markets
  • Antique sales
  • Teddy bear picnics
  • Walking tours
  • Guided bird and flower walks
  • Memorial picnics
  • Movies by starlight
  • Bus tours
  • Quilters fairs
  • Poetry readings
  • Writers on space and place
  • Architectural debates
  • Vintage car shows
  • Fashion shows
  • Dance events
  • Music perfomances

Doors Open Alberta creates an opportunity for organizations to work together to foster public understanding and support for the buildings and special places around us and the broad gamut of people involved in the construction, use, maintenance and preservation of such structures. All have a stake in their community ensuring that it is vital and creative. Space becomes place with a resulting sense of ownership and pride!
