Mission Statement: "Presenting the Past to the Present and Preserving it for the Future." Incorporated in 1907, the Historical Society of Alberta (H.S.A.) is a charitable organization that acts to promote and seek the preservation of Alberta's rich history through programming, publications and educational projects.
A provincial body, the H.S.A. has four regional chapters: Edmonton and District Historical Society, Central Alberta Historical Society, Chinook Country Historical Society and Lethbridge Historical Society.
The society publishes a quarterly journal entitled Alberta History that includes scholarly and popular articles on a broad range of subjects and geographical areas. In addition, a quarterly newsletter entitled "History Now" details heritage news and upcoming events. The Alberta Records Publication Board, an H.S.A. committee, also publishes source historical documents such as diaries, correspondence and memoirs. Each chapter of the H.S.A. also publishes its own newsletter detailing their programs, events, history and local heritage, they also have a mandate to publish or sponsor publications relating to the local provincial history. The Society's publications are sold in the office.
The H.S.A. and its chapters have over 200 volunteers throughout the province contributing over 20, 000 volunteer hours, incurred in administration, producing its publications and providing a variety of historical programs and free lectures. Events: Members of the H.S.A. gather at the Annual General Meetings and Conferences which are hosted by the chapters at locations around the province. They enjoy a variety of programs, tours, symposia and guest speakers. The chapters present programs throughout the years which include historical presentations, tours, workshops, book launches, socials, banquets and celebrations.
All programming is open to the public, with a nominal fee being charged occasionally for special events. Research requests are attended to whenever possible.
