Sports

Sports, both amateur and professional, have grown through the development of Northlands over the last century. In the rather exclusive world of competitive sports, where people could be admitted or rejected based on a number of arbitrary criteria, Northlands created a place for everyone, so long as they could entertain.

While female athletes were still a rare curiosity in other quarters, Northlands played host to the Commercial Graduates Basketball Team starting in 1915. For many years after that, as the Grads grew in fame and stature, Northlands’ forebears set aside the Livestock Pavilion for their games. In 1924, female basketball players headed the Exhibition parade.

Northlands was also committed to skating activities since nearly the beginning, turning the Pavilion into a rink every winter and hosting many of the early greats of ice hockey. The Oil Kings and the Edmonton Flyers preceded the Edmonton Oilers in shaving the rink with their sharp blades, playing in the Edmonton Gardens long before the Coliseum was built.

Early on, Northlands also paired up with the Glenora Skating Club—a prelude to their eventual relationship with the Ice Cycles and Ice Capades Shows of the 1940s.

Whether it be the 1983 Universiade Games, held in Edmonton in part because of the work done by Northlands Directors, or the Commonwealth Games garnered for the same reason, Northlands has never been shy about demonstrating its commitment to entertaining Edmonton.
