The heritage Canada Foundation (HCF), also known as Heritage Canada, was created by the Federal Government of Canada in 1973 as a national, non-governmental, charitable foundation to promote the preservation of the built heritage of Canada. It's mission statement, adopted in 1997, is: To foster and encourage the understanding, protection and sustainable evolution of Canada's cultural landscape, in particular of the architectural heritage of that landscape. The Foundation is a membership-based organization, and, through it's membership of close to 2,000 individuals and a similar number of organizations, it represents close to 100,000 members of Canada's heritage community. Heritage Canada is a national organization serving the heritage interests of all Canadians in all parts of Canada.

The Foundation is governed by a board of directors currently comprising 12 Governors, one from each province and territory, elected by the membership in that province or territory. The current Alberta Governor is Trudy Cowan, of Calgary, who can be reached at 403-244-6333 (c/o the Lougheed House Conservation Society). HCF operations are administered by a professional staff based in the national office in Ottawa.

Heritage Canada publishes a quarterly magazine, Heritage, which is free to members, and an Annual Report which is available on request. Other publications, such as its annual Heritage Day material (Teacher's Guide and Poster), are available to members and the interested public. A registered charitable organization, and a Trustee of the Crown, Heritage Canada was created by way of endowment. Investment income from the endowment is the major source of revenue, augmented by grants, bequests, donations and membership fees.

For further information about the programs and services provided by the Heritage Canada Foundation, please contact the national office by telephone, fax or email.
