Legacy, Alberta's Cultural Heritage Magazine, is an independently owned and operated, quarterly publication. Launched in January 1996 and named Alberta Magazine of the Year in 1997, Legacy contains stories about the ways Albertans across the province create, celebrate, and preserve our enduring, rich, and diverse cultural heritage.
Alberta writers explore architecture, books, special places and events, contemporary arts and more. Regular columns cover people, food, destinations, gardens, books, museum issues, and provocative ideas.
Cover stories have paid tribute to W.O. Mitchell, explored Alberta through the eyes of its artists, examined Cowboy Culture, celebrated the Aboriginal Women's Voices project at the Banff Centre, and reported the amazing prehistoric drama at the St. Mary Reservoir. Other features have reflected on the commemoration of the signing of Treaty 8, described Alberta's 2,000 year old "Fete of Clay," shown how heritage planning saves landmarks and proves good for business, as well as shared Metis elder Alvena Strasbourg's journey from the bush to the boardroom. Writers have visited an historic photographer's studio in the Crowsnest Pass, met the women behind the Al Rashid, Canada's first mosque, and found out about Alberta's fiddlers: old-time, eclectic, even electric. Legacy has also delivered the straight goods on gay life in Alberta, considered the legacy of child poverty, and looked at the Lubicon land claim.
Legacy has over 20,000 readers: about 3,600 paid subscriptions include about 2,000 Alberta schools, as well as community, arts, and heritage groups, public libraries, families and individuals. Legacy is sold at newsstands, bookstores, and museum shops across the province and selected retail outlets in Ontario and B.C. Legacy also supplies Air Canada and Canadian Airlines by contract with magazines for their business class lounges in Edmonton and Calgary.
Legacy is a full colour magazine, minimum 52 pages. Subscriptions are $19.95 CDN/ year in Canada; outside Canada: $29.95 CDN/year. Cheque or VISA accepted.
