Education
Northlands Park proudly supports education and does so in several ways.
Throughout its many years of growth and development, the organization
has partnered with schools and government to
promote learning in a legacy that continues today.
Over a single school year, up to 20 primary school classes are
welcomed on to the exhibition grounds for a week of innovative learning.
Through the Edmonton Oilers In Class Education (ICE) school program,
also known as ICE School, Northlands Park collaborates with public and
Catholic schools. Together, they offer specially-tailored activities to
participating children.
The one-week lesson plan includes skill building that directly ties
in to school curriculum and encompasses such topics as the social and
cultural roles of hockey. Inside the Rexall Place classroom, students
are involved in activities that foster
problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
In addition to Northlands Park support of early learning strategies,
teenagers are encouraged to develop their entrepreneurial skills in a
team environment through the Junior Achievements of Northern Alberta
program, of which the organization is a recognized partner.
In 1981, a Northlands Park Educational Endowment Fund was created to
recognize students accessing
post-secondary schooling. There are a
number of institutions in Alberta that administer the various awards
including the University of Alberta, the Northern Alberta Institute of
Technology (NAIT), Norquest College, Athabasca University, Grant McEwan
College, and Fairview College.
The Northlands Park Entrance Scholarship is intended for Alberta
residents who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and are
entering their first year of undergraduate studies. Other Northlands
endowed awards recognize students who achieve exceptional improvement in
their studies, and those completing their programs in fields such as
geology.
Educational contributions are a significant way in which Northlands
Park gives to the community. With the recognition that education is
crucial, the organization continues to share its resources and make
formal learning accessible and exciting.
