Volunteers Northlands has, from its beginnings, been driven by the dedication of its volunteers. In fact, the organization was started by individuals who had more than profit in mind for the agricultural exhibition. Some volunteer roles have changed over the intervening years, and especially as the organization and its compliment of paid staff has grown, but the Board of Directors is still comprised of individuals who have made an unpaid commitment to Northlands Park. There are now hundreds of volunteers in other areas as well. In some ways, modern volunteers are held to the same expectations as paid staff; everyone, from the greeter to the director, is governed by a set of professional guidelines. These guidelines regulate conduct and apparel, in the hope of cultivating the level of civility necessary for volunteers to enjoy their experience. These people are involved in most areas of Northlands operation, including the Klondike Days Parade, Summer Craft Market, AgExperience, Farm Family Awards, 4-H, Seed Show, Canadian Finals Rodeo Black Tie Bingo, and Rodeo Magic. Depending upon their circumstances, younger volunteers may gain valuable work experience on the job at Northlands, and older ones have an increased opportunity to socialize with the public and each other. Individuals who give of their time in ensuring Northlands’ success can, after two years of active service, apply for a five-dollar share. The share does not increase in value, and can only be held by those living in North-Central Alberta. Shareholders are entitled to vote on Board membership, and may become Directors themselves if nominated. A President, elected by the membership, governs the Board itself. Each Director, including the president, is set over committees in a function area matched to her talents. Volunteers are honoured for their contributions with an Appreciation Night and a variety of service award opportunities offered both through Northlands and a variety of related organizations.
