Elk Point

Elk Point, a thriving progressive community of over 1500 people is located in the heart of Alberta's Lakeland approximately 250 km east of Edmonton on Highway 41. The North Saskatchewan River flows just to the South and our River Campsite offers you a spectacular view of the river valley.

Elk Point is rich in the history of the Hudson's Bay fur trade era. The area pays tribute to Peter Fidler whose 32-foot statue welcomes you to the community. Fort George-Buckingham House Interpretive Center, located east of Elk Point on Second Highway 646 on the north bank of the North Saskatchewan River takes you back in time to the original site where the two forts competed for the area's fur trade. The center is complete with depictions of fur trading, operations of the fort and the hard life of a pioneer. The Town of Elk Point features a 100-ft long historical mural, which is dedicated to the pioneer history.

Additional Activities

Fort George/Buckingham House Interpretive - 2008
Archaeology has revealed the original sites of Fort George and Buckingham House. Both are accessible through a system of pathways and signage. Ground marking outlines the fort structures built in 1794 and you can still see cellar depressions and hearth stones. - View the Fort/House.
