St. Jean-Baptiste Day on 24 June is well known across Canada as a celebration of French-Canadian history and culture, but Franco-Albertans have known since 1989 that the party doesn’t stop there! Every summer, Francophones and Francophiles in Alberta celebrate La Féte franco-albertaine, a French-Canadian festival with a unique Albertan flavour. The festival actually started off as a camping weekend hosted by the Francophone youth group Francophonie jeunesse de l’Alberta (FJA), but the weekend soon grew into the festival it is today when the FJA approached the Association canadienne-française de l’Alberta (ACFA) with the idea of turning the weekend into an annual event. Each year, a different Francophone community in Alberta hosts La Fête franco-albertaine, and Alberta Francophones and Francophiles gather for a weekend of song, celebration, and, like the first celebration, camping.
The Heritage Community Foundation salutes Alberta’s Francophone Community as it prepares to celebrate La Féte franco-albertaine from July 28 to 30 in St. Albert. We invite you to join the celebration of Franco-Albertan heritage by exploring these websites on the Alberta Online Encyclopedia (the portal of which is available in French and English!)
