Faculté Saint-Jean (Campus Saint-Jean) gains a new residence and a renovated Academic & Cultural Centre.
Foote Field opens.
Athabasca Hall and Computing Science Centre buildings are joined.
Pandas hockey team begins a 110-game unbeaten streak.
2002
Swine and Research and Technology Centre (SRTC) opens.
Gateway, which was run as a department of the Students’ Union, becomes an independent newspaper run by Gateway Student Journalism Society (GSJS).
2003
Mary Schäffer Hall (new student residence) opens.
U of A, Sun Microsystems, Inc., and Alberta government agree to establish a $3.65 million Centre of Excellence in Integrated NanoTools (CEINT).
Gateway goes online
2004
Merger of U of A and Augustana University College.
Saville Sports Centre opens.
International House welcomes its first residents (representing 31 countries).
In collaboration with the Gateway Alumni Association, the Gateway Student Journalism Society, University Archives, and University Libraries, Gateway begins online archive of over 50,000 pages of newsprint stretching back to 1910.
2005
President Dr. Rod Fraser named an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Olds College and U of A broaden affiliation and transfer opportunities.
Indira Samarasekera becomes President.
International House is officially opened by Chancellor Eric Newell and by Cedza Dlamini, Prince of Swaziland, grandson of Nelson Mandela, and the UN Youth Ambassador for the Millennium Development Goals.
2006
National Institute for Nanotechnology opens.
Board of Governors approves the creation of Canada's first university faculty dedicated to public health (has a $1-billion budget).
Corbett Hall Retrofit completed.
Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science, Phase 1 completed.
Utilities Upgrade and Expansion, Phase 1b completed.
Alberta Cardiovascular and Stroke Research Centre (ABACUS) opens.
