Welcome

Hello, and welcome to the People of the Boreal Forest Edukit developed by the Heritage Community Foundation. This Edukit is intended to provide a range of information and activities that highlight and promote an understanding of the People who live and work in the Boreal Forest region of Alberta.

In the Teacher Zone, you will find Boreal Forest-specific lesson plans dealing with the Forest, its People, and its Traditions. The lesson plans range from Elementary up to Grade 11 and cover the following topics: Plants and Plant Usage, Cree Communities, Changing Communities, First Nations and the Environment, Trapping in the Bushland, Aboriginal Beliefs and Values, Aboriginal and Métis Influence, and Interdependence.

The Student Zone contains photographs of the Forest, The People, and the Traditions as it relates to the Boreal Forest. The audio clips deal with various accounts of life in the Boreal Forest with a particular emphasis on forest habitat, trading and historical places in Alberta. The video samples are taken from an interview with the author of Carving Faces, Carving Lives: People of the Boreal Forest; Terry Garvin. Also found in the Student Zone is textual information, and various activities/games dealing with the topics above.
