Management

Telephone companies are complex but unified organizations that are constantly evolving to accommodate new ideas and technology. It is the duty of the management part of the company to make the intricate, interconnected web of people function cohesively and efficiently.

The management team of a telephone company controls and directs the business and its expenditures, and orchestrates all of the people who work within the company to provide a strong, successful telecommunications service for its customers.

There are various management positions in a telephone company. Most often, there is a general manager to whom other managers from the various branches of the company report.

Another section is in charge of equipment and building, who through research and extensive surveys determines which type of equipment is necessary for installation and in which areas.

The 300,000th telephoneThere are engineering managers who are responsible for maintaining the quality of connections, ensuring electrical safety, and establishing other safety standards. Others are responsible for emergency power in exchange buildings, construction and rearrangement of existing buildings, and purchase of land upon which to build.

A plant extension group in a telephone company deals with the capital and budget, often conducting studies and surveys to determine a company’s capabilities and needs. This section also projects future growth to make planning for future employees, buildings and facilities easier.

Yet another engineering division deals with all outside telephone equipment such as aerial and buried cable. By working both with other city departments and other groups within the company, the people in this area are responsible for determining the most economical methods of servicing new and existing areas. They estimate costs and work with budgets, monitoring total expenditures. They may also conduct studies to make sure that the engineering methods currently in use are the best available, and comparable to those being used by other telephone companies.

A successful company requires a good customer services department, and a telephone company is no exception. There are sections that deal with customer complaints, including billing and connection problems.

One such example is the branch that deals with the creation and distribution of telephone books and yellow pages. Another involves the people who make sure that the operation of public pay phones works smoothly and efficiently.

Together, these sections of management work together with the labour division to provide the best possible service to customers.
