Anglicization

Quicklinks

The question of Anglicization is a touchy one for Catholic Franco-Albertans. The prevalence of "mixed" marriages between French and English speakers caused a need for change in the delivery of religious services, which used to be exclusively francophone. Today, in the small parishes, mass is often said in the two languages, while in larger parishes such as St. Paul or Beaumont, separate services are held to accommodate both language groups.

Catholic schools, particularly those that are French, help conserve the maternal language by teaching catechism in French. A few parishes remain almost exclusively francophone, such as St. Thomas d’Aquin and Saint-Joachim in Edmonton, or the paroisse Sainte-Famille in Calgary.
