Two mutual aid societies from Quebec were established in Alberta in 19111.  L’Alliance nationale was founded by the archbishop of Montreal, Bishop Fabre in 1892, while the Artisans canadiens-français society dated from 1876. The aim of the two organizations was to unite Catholic francophones of North America and to promote the French language and Catholic Church through social gatherings.

The societies also offered financial services such as life and accident insurance and loans.
