HomecomingThe defeat of Germany and Japan brought an end to six gruelling years of combat, bloodshed and destruction. The end of hostilities brought much joy and relief to Albertans but the celebrations were bittersweet. The price of victory had been steep – necessary, but steep. As people celebrated and rejoiced in the allied victory they shed both tears of joy and sadness. The war forever altered humanity and world and new threats lurked on the horizon, but the days immediately following the end of hostilities was a time to look forward to homecoming and the rebuilding of lives of thousands of Albertans. |
