Leduc: Causes and Effects

Opening day, Leduc No. 1 discovery well, February 13, 1947.It was the discovery of major oil-bearing structures in Alberta's sedimentary basin, which supplied a major impetus to economic growth in Canada. In the early 1950s, the strongest sector in Canada's economy was oil and gas exploration and development, particularly within Alberta. While the Leduc discovery in 1947 was not the first show of oil in Alberta, it touched off a series of discoveries which cumulatively strengthened the whole economy.
