Road Materials

Road Tamper, 1924.As stone and gravel are not as a rule available, the attempt is being made to employ asphalt obtained from the bituminous sands of northern Alberta as the stabilizing material for such roads. The work of the year has been: firstly, to devise a method of extracting the asphalt from the bituminous sands; and, secondly, to study the stabilizing action of the extracted asphalt when incorporated into prairie roads.

A method of extracting the asphalt has been worked out which appears to be satisfactory. Good laboratory results have also been obtained in producing stable bituminized soil mixtures. A further activity of the year has been a study, in co-operation with the City Engineer's Department for the City of Edmonton on the practical suitability of crude bituminous sands for city pavement construction.
