Subarctic Climate

The climate of the Subarctic Subregion is continental and cold-temperate with moist, short, cool summers and long, cold winters. The mean May to September temperature is about 10-12 degrees Celsius while summer temperatures are cooler here than in adjacent low elevation areas. Winter temperatures are particularly moderate when cold Arctic air masses affect lower areas and temperatures increase with altitude. Total annual precipitation is generally around 400-450 millimetres with most falling in the summer. The frost-free period in the Subarctic Subregion is less than 45 days per year.
