Rationale:

Sport and recreation exist in Aboriginal communities in a variety of different formats. Sport and recreation include the playing of traditional games, trapping, hunting, fishing, and include participation in competitive sports. In the pre-contact era, trapping and hunting were the primary source of securing food. Males and females had their own recreational activities that varied across the tribes. Sport and recreation is a form of cultural expression, provided an important social aspect, and helped develop group cohesiveness. It is important that students be introduced to some of the traditional activities and contemporary interests of Aboriginal People in Canada, which are a reflection of how different communities functioned.

Introductory Activity:

Record key words and phrases and organize into a Venn diagram that has overlap between "sport" and "recreation". What does sport and recreation include? Why do people participate in sport and recreation? How is sport and recreation tied to culture? What is the social aspect of participating in sport and culture?
