The Holocaust’s Ghost: Writings on Art, Politics, Law, and Education won the Best Scholarly Award. It was the eighth year in a row the University of Alberta Press had won in this category. The book was a multidisciplinary look at the impact of the Holocaust. The Best Book Design Award went to Alan Brownoff for his design of Apostrophes IV: Speaking You is Holiness, by E.D. Blodgett. In 1908, the site of the University of Alberta was a wild tangle of bush and sod. Naturally, construction required securing funds, preparing the land, hiring an architect, and obtaining supervisors and construction crews.
President Henry Marshall Tory thought it was important that senior faculty and deans have homes close to the University, so a number of houses were constructed. The design and construction of these faculty houses began after the 1913 arrival of Cecil Scott Burgess, Professor of Architecture. These homes became known as the Ring Houses because accessed was from the northwest part of campus via a ring road.

Four of these historic Ring Houses have been preserved by the University of Alberta.
The University of Alberta Press (UAP) calls the historic Ring House 2 home. UAP began in 1969 and is the oldest prairie university press in Canada. This award-winning press has a publishing program that produces not only excellent works of scholarship, but also fine books for general readers.
Publication areas include biography, history, language, literature, natural history, and regional interest. In recent years, the University of Alberta Press has expanded its publishing program to include health and social policy, travel/adventure writing, and business.
UAP contributes to the intellectual and cultural life of Alberta and Canada by publishing local, national, and international titles. The Press follows a stellar publishing process that embraces research-based knowledge, creative thought, high editorial standards, and peer review.
“Our publishing program,” states Linda Cameron, UAP Director, “is about advancing knowledge and exchanging ideas.”
Over decades, the University of Alberta Press has garnered an impressive list of awards for its books, authors, editors, and designers. Brief examples of these awards include the Alberta Book Awards, Independent Publisher Book Awards, Grant MacEwan Author’s Awards, the Alcuin Society Citations for Excellence in Book Design in Canada, and Word Guild Writing Awards.
UAP titles are supported by diligent and rigorous marketing. Among many of its current and notable marketing endeavours are plans to expand the annual number of published UAP titles and to reach broader national and international audiences.
