I started out to read Darwin with the purpose of finding
out what was what. The more I found out about controversies
surrounding books, the more likely I was to read them. Of
course Darwin and the rest of them assumed that people knew
everything about the facts of life, so they didn't mention
that. However, the most vivid religious experience I ever
had was when I finished Darwin's Descent of Man. I can't
think of anything that influenced me more deeply than that.
I got out of bed and thanked God for evolution. It confirmed
everything that was beautiful.
