For Albertans of Icelandic descent, the fjallkona or
"woman of the mountain" is symbolic of their cultural
and historical links with their ancestral homeland. Each
year they gather at Markerville near Red Deer, on or around
Iceland's National Day, to name the fjallkona to represent
the community at cultural events through the year. This
article by David Ridley features images from the crowning of the fjallkona
in 1996.
